Papers, 1812-1934 (bulk 1825-1855)

Correspondence, deeds, receipts, and other documents. The first series contains Merrill's correspondence (1812-1854), school essays, family correspondence after his death, and transcripts of selected correspondence between Merrill and his family. The second series (1814-1934) contains personal and family correspondence and documents, and business papers dealing with Merrill's activities in real estate, as president of the State Bank of Indiana and the Madison and Indianapolis Rail Road Company, and in the bookstore firm of W. and S. Merrill. Other topics include Merrill's law practice, a history of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, and county government. Correspondents include Caleb Mills, J.F.D. Lanier, Henry Ward Beecher, James M. Ray, Thaddeus Stevens, Charles W. and Julia M. Moores, and Catharine Merrill. There is also an engraving of Merrill.

Caleb Mills (1806-1879) was born in Dunbarton, N.H. and graduated from Dartmouth College (Ind.) in 1828. In 1833 he began teaching at the newly opened Wabash Teachers Seminary and Manual Labor College (later Wabash College). Mills is best known for his theories and activities concerning public education in Ind. He married Sarah Marshall in 1833. Merrill came to Vevay, Ind. in 1816 and in 1819 began his political career, serving in the state General Assembly and as State treasurer. Lawyer from Pennsylvania who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1859 and served as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
